Advanced diagnostics include tests that go beyond the basic blood work and disease screening performed as part of your pet’s regular preventive care. Advanced diagnostics that we can perform for your pet at Foland Veterinary Services include:

Digital radiography — Our digital X-ray unit can be used to obtain images of a variety of structures, including the heart, lungs, abdominal structures, and bones.
Ultrasonography — Ultrasound provides a detailed three-dimensional image of your pet’s soft tissue structures, and is often used to view abdominal organs.
Dental radiography — Dental X-rays allow us to diagnose oral diseases and injuries, such as periodontal disease and tooth deterioration.
In-house diagnostics — We can perform a variety of blood, urine, and fecal tests to screen for diseases that can affect your pet.
Reference laboratory diagnostics — Veterinary reference labs provide a plethora of advanced tests to screen for and diagnose specific disease conditions.

What advanced diagnostics are available for my pet?

Why might my pet need advanced diagnostic testing?

Advanced diagnostic testing is typically recommended for pets who we suspect may have a disease, injury, or other medical condition. For example, if one of our veterinarians detects an abnormality during your pet’s physical exam, or you have noticed your pet acting ill, we may recommend in-house diagnostics to evaluate their overall health. We may also recommend reference laboratory diagnostics to gain more information or screen for a specific disease. Digital X-rays can help us diagnose a variety of conditions, from orthopedic injuries to intestinal obstructions, and may be recommended for an internal view of your pet’s anatomy. Ultrasound provides a more detailed view of your pet’s organs and soft tissues, and may be recommended to diagnose conditions such as kidney or liver disease, or to locate an abdominal mass. Dental X-rays are used to identify diseased teeth, and are performed before every professional dental cleaning.

What can I expect?

Most diagnostic testing does not require prior preparation on your part, but we will let you know if your pet should be fasted or brought in first thing in the morning for their appointment. Although sedation may be required to prevent pain or anxiety in your pet while we take X-rays, most diagnostics can be performed while they are awake. Our team will discuss any advanced diagnostics we recommend so you understand why they are being performed, the information we will gain, and any special instructions you should follow.
